Big Decisions Must Rest Upon the Answers to Small Questions

Posted 12/14/2011 09:06 AM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

Big decisions must rest upon the answer to small questions. This original yet profound statement by well known and respected Alaska Pioneer Bud Helmericks was written in his book, The Last of The Bush Pilots of which was published in 1969.

I have been a pilot for many years and highly respected Bud Helmericks as a true role model for Alaskan aviation pioneering and true leadership. I have had a copy of this book for years, read it and flipped through it reading short passages, reading this statement every time, yet missing something profound. This year I once again picked up the book from my library shelf after reading about the death of this great man.

The Art of Business- Just Make A Decision, Not Later, Now

There’s a certain cadence that you can feel when you spend time hanging any well-run startup company. The management team has to have a bias toward making decisions. They know that a 70% accurate decision made quickly and based on sound principles is better than a 90% decision made after careful consideration.
The startup entrepreneur knows that they’re going to be wrong often. They’re flexible and willing to admit when they’re wrong. They don’t create a culture of punishment for mistakes. They live be the credo that if you’re never making mistakes you’re not trying hard enough’. This is an excerpt from a great article on TechCrunch…

The Art of Being An Original- Bud Helmericks, His Life, His Legend

Posted 03/10/2010 08:25 AM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

I man I revered and respected through books and adventurous writings when I was a teenager, Bud Helmericks, a pioneer, highly skilled bush pilot, master guide and writer died January 28, 2010 in Wickenburg, Arizona at the ripe age of 93. Bud is considered one of Alaska’s most famous bush pilots himself. He holds the Award of Merit, Territory of Alaska, for “Special Service in the Arctic Regions.” He couldn’t tell you exactly how many Alaska flight hours he had, because he tired of adding up his flight hours after logging more than 27,000 hours. In well-worn seats of his small aircraft, one of which was his Cessna 170 named ‘Arctic Tern’, he crossed thousands of miles of mostly uninhabited wilderness on wheels, skis or pontoons.

The Art of Business- Learn, Do, Be

Posted 06/25/2009 12:38 PM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

I have been advised at various times of my life from key individuals to always become the expert on matters important to me and not seek nor listen to the so called experts. That was quite a bold statement coming from these individuals into my ears as advice. And these particular people were at the top of their game, wealthy professionals, prominent businessman. Henry Litzenburger was one such gentleman in Ft.St.John, BC.

The Bosse's Bicycle

Posted 04/29/2009 08:22 PM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

Remember when you were a kid…

Even the boss rides a bicycle!…and you were given your first bike? Of course it may not have quite looked like the one in this picture but just the same it was your first bike! Looking after your bike was just as important as riding it, remember? I washed my bike, fixed when it needed, and kept it locked in my special spot for easy access when needed. I project forward to today and the art of running a business. It is very much like that special bike. Consider each spoke to represent an employee of a company. One spoke can cause the bike to not steer correctly, eventually causing other spokes to not work properly and wear out, eventually making the bike un-rideable, requiring major maintenance to fix it, or eventually needing to buy a new bike, which mom and dad were not about to do! They did not have the money to hand out because of negligence and poor managment, something you owned and were responsible for. Business is exactly the same way. You do not want a bad spoke in the wheel of your business to become the ’spokesman’ for the entire operation, thereby affecting other spokes. Lets take employees for example. World bike racers maintain their bikes in as top shape as they keep themselves, knowing the loss of any edge to win is apparent which could quickly deteriate ending in failure, losing of the race. So it is with business. Any employee(s) that brings to their workplace and causes disruption in the wheel of the operation with aggressiveness, control, negativity and drama is disfunctional to the goodwill and comradery of the team and will need to be fixed or replaced. It’s that simple. Or morale will go down quickly to the point of losing good employees and once happy clients, customers. Your good employees will sense poor leadership and guidance, which will make it way to the top of the organization affecting the stearing of the company, thereby hurting the customer, which could eventually end the business! Smart intuitive leaders recognize a bad spokesman affecting the operation quickly and nip it in the bud. This keeps the business going forward with the momentum it needs to success at all times and have the edge. The bad spoke may not be an employee but in the finances, structure, or even the management and leadership. Any part of the business hurting the wheel of the operation. And you can only do this by showing up and paying attention to your business. A great boss will always look after his/her bike, ensuring it goes for many, many miles, safely, quickly and effectively, through all kinds of weather with the best ride possible over rough and smooth terrain, up and down hills, around detours, over cement and gravel, but always getting you to where you want to get to.

Don’t let any spoke on your bike become the spokesman for you!

  • Ladette To Lady, A Code For Society

Posted 01/03/2009 06:24 AM in , by Grant Gibson, received one comment.

A recent tv show I watched based from the UK brought once again to the forefront the art of manners and social etiquette. Eight gals, in their 20’s, were taken to a school for one month to ‘learn’ the right way to ‘behave’ and socialize/mingle with people, especially single males of royal dissent. All of the gals came from backgrounds in common society. More specific, bars chasing, binge drinking ‘anything goes’ in public type of behaviors. Very few of them could use ‘higher’ fluid language with eloquence, present themselves with poise, could cook, or knew appropriate dress code according to the standards of royal society. Each week one of the eight gals were ’sent home’ and would not make the status of ‘lady’. Only one would be chosen as a ‘lady’ in the final show.

Their behaviors were amazing to watch unfold as days went on. When they were in a ‘controlled’ environment they faired okay during the learning phases, but left on their own to have the live-in school to themselves or go out on their own quickly revealed their weaknesses and just how fast we in common society go back to our ‘old ways’! None of them knew or displayed what was appropriate in any given environment. They went out to meet eligible high society bachelors, royal ladies, wealthy men of social status and barons in wealthy environments/homes, but through the efforts of their teachers, had to work hard at bringing themselves to acceptable levels. They did not even know how to ‘talk’ and mingle with high society let alone interact with a special poise and commanding presence of beauty.

There is a lesson for everyone in this, including me, and I am a male! Appropriate behavior and interaction is a learned art! The next step after this learning is to always pay attention to choose behaving his way or quickly we fall back to the old ways quickly…and in most cases, not even know it! You and I have total agency to choose the higher ground of social interaction and behavior.

If you aspire for super health and super wealth in your life you might want to consider what the wealthy are doing, and follow it! It is like a protocol, a code of action, a step by step system of action which will integrate ‘inside’ you.

Choose this new path and you may receive an RSVP from royalty to attend the ball, be flowered with roses, endowed with rubies and pearls, showered with kind words and expensive wine, have your special engraved name place at the table of abundance with silver utensils and gold plates.

Are you up to the challenge?

Is A Thinker Really A Thinker? Something To Think About

Posted 11/09/2007 04:37 PM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

‘C K Prahalad, India-born management guru and academician, has been voted the world’s most influential living management thinker ahead of hands-on managers like Bill Gates, Alan Greenspan and Richard Branson. Prahalad, who is the first Indian-origin thinker to claim the title, was ranked number three in last year’s Thinkers 50 list brought out by ?Suntop Media.’?

This is the opening headlines of a recent article on the web. What importance does this have, who does it effect, what does it exactly mean…

    Missing, One Hero, Steve Fossett

I have been, like thousands of others, tracking the news stories daily in hopes of good news finding Steve Fossett alive and hopefully un-injured. The days diminish that possibility but that’s all you can hope for. It’s amazing the team spirit and collective force that gets into motion to search for a missing aircraft.
I have had the opportunity to search for more than one aircraft that went missing in my years as being a pilot…
