Put The 'Art' Into Your Article

All’s not what it seems in this internet world of blogs, forums, and all areas dynamic to publish stuff in. Most believe they are putting out time sensitive important information for the world to read, that the masses would not know or get if it wasn’t for their written voice. Mark Cuban recently wrote an article called Who Cares What People Write which is thought provoking about human nature and what we think is important vs. what is important.

The Bosse's Bicycle

Posted 04/29/2009 08:22 PM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

Remember when you were a kid…

Even the boss rides a bicycle!…and you were given your first bike? Of course it may not have quite looked like the one in this picture but just the same it was your first bike! Looking after your bike was just as important as riding it, remember? I washed my bike, fixed when it needed, and kept it locked in my special spot for easy access when needed. I project forward to today and the art of running a business. It is very much like that special bike. Consider each spoke to represent an employee of a company. One spoke can cause the bike to not steer correctly, eventually causing other spokes to not work properly and wear out, eventually making the bike un-rideable, requiring major maintenance to fix it, or eventually needing to buy a new bike, which mom and dad were not about to do! They did not have the money to hand out because of negligence and poor managment, something you owned and were responsible for. Business is exactly the same way. You do not want a bad spoke in the wheel of your business to become the ’spokesman’ for the entire operation, thereby affecting other spokes. Lets take employees for example. World bike racers maintain their bikes in as top shape as they keep themselves, knowing the loss of any edge to win is apparent which could quickly deteriate ending in failure, losing of the race. So it is with business. Any employee(s) that brings to their workplace and causes disruption in the wheel of the operation with aggressiveness, control, negativity and drama is disfunctional to the goodwill and comradery of the team and will need to be fixed or replaced. It’s that simple. Or morale will go down quickly to the point of losing good employees and once happy clients, customers. Your good employees will sense poor leadership and guidance, which will make it way to the top of the organization affecting the stearing of the company, thereby hurting the customer, which could eventually end the business! Smart intuitive leaders recognize a bad spokesman affecting the operation quickly and nip it in the bud. This keeps the business going forward with the momentum it needs to success at all times and have the edge. The bad spoke may not be an employee but in the finances, structure, or even the management and leadership. Any part of the business hurting the wheel of the operation. And you can only do this by showing up and paying attention to your business. A great boss will always look after his/her bike, ensuring it goes for many, many miles, safely, quickly and effectively, through all kinds of weather with the best ride possible over rough and smooth terrain, up and down hills, around detours, over cement and gravel, but always getting you to where you want to get to.

Don’t let any spoke on your bike become the spokesman for you!

Until the next WebLog, GG

The Magical RV, Holiday Adventures on Four Large Wheels
When affluence sets in to the average great Canadian they vow to never feel a rain drop again, never have to start another camp fire, never set up a crappy tent, never share a dirty washroom, never to eat a burnt or raw cold meal again, never, never…you get the picture…

Value vs. Time- Who's the winner in your day?

Posted 06/13/2007 04:53 AM in , by Grant Gibson, no comments.

What is more important to you? Time or Money? What an interesting thought! Like this question has to be asked. Upon further investigation some interesting things develop…
1- Time has to be broken into fragments in order to track it properly. eg.- How about the all-mighty paycheck. Most bosses want to know how many hours you worked. This is the way they understand it- hours for money. If you are late arriving in the morning you know what happens; management eyes you and voila, upon strike 3 your to the bosses office to poured over the coals. It doesn’t matter if you missed the bus, car broke down, had a sick child to tend to, etc. YOUR ONLY VALUE TO YOUR BOSS IS THE TIME YOU WORK. Summer vacation? How about 2 weeks
